Information Alert Services, Government

AutoRecalls

31 May 2005. Justia, a Web design and marketing service for law firms, has created RSS feeds for automobile recalls. The feed covers hundreds of makes and models. Drill down the list until you find your make, model and year. Then display available recalls at the Justia site, or copy and paste the RSS feed into your reader or aggregator. The feed displays the make, model, year and part affected, as well as the first two sentences of the description.

The site offers no information about the source of the data, but it appears to be the Office of Defects Investigation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

CDC Mailing Lists

18 September 2002. The Centers for Disease Control provides several email notification lists covering table of contents for CDC publications and other issues.

Census New on the Site

4 August 2004. The U.S. Census Bureau provides an XML-based news feed for documents, statistics and other information newly available at the Web site. It's a headlines only feed.

Current Weather Conditions

8 September 2004. Track current weather conditions for about 1,800 observation stations in the United States via RSS or XML. Select from the pull-down menu to find weather stations in your state, and then copy the link into your reader to display current weather conditions. The information is provided by the National Weather Service.

Daily Digest

18 September 2002. Receive the Federal Communications Commission's Daily Digest by email. It "provides a brief synopsis of Commission orders, news releases, speeches, public notices and all other FCC documents that are released each business day."

Department of Labor Email Updates

8 September 2004. The U.S. Department of Labor is adding a series of email alerts on a variety of topics, unemployment claims reports, disability employment policies, labor law compliance and small business programs.

DOE OIG Early Alert

19 December 2002. Department of Energy, Office of the Inspector General provides a distribution list for informing subscribers about significant OIG reports, press releases, and publications as they appear on the agency's Web site.

DOT DMS Listserv

18 September 2002. The Department of Transportation provides a listserv for its dockets.

EDInfo

18 September 2002. The Department of Education maintains this announcement listserv "featuring new reports, funding opportunities, and other information." It also provides an archive you can browse.

EPA Listservs

18 September 2002. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers several listservs for keeping current with news and documents from the EPA. These include Federal Register notices, compliance news, and more.

Exempt Organizations Update

22 March 2005. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers an e-mail subscription service for current news and information having an impact on the tax-exempt community. Subscribers receive periodic e-mail updates about developments in exempt organizations tax law and regulations, upcoming IRS training and events, and other information.

FAA Technical Center RSS Feed

25 January 2005. The Federal Aviation Administration's technical library announces the availability of recently published technical reports via an XML-based feed.

Government E-mail Newsletters

30 October 2003. Revised 1 August 2007. FirstGov.gov facilitates subscribing to government-sponsored newsletters and electronic current awareness services. Select from a list of sources covering business and finance, defense, education, employment and benefits, environment and agriculture, foreign affairs, health, safety and consumer protection, taxes and travel. Listings in each category contain a brief description. You check the ones you want and then enter your email address at the bottom of the page.

Government Podcasts

12 September 2005. The librarian-managed portal, Free Government Information, explains podcasting and compiles an extensive list of podcasts available from government sources.

Government Technology

4 August 2004. The Web site of Government Technology magazine offers several XML-based news feeds. Topics include electronic government, privacy, security, homeland security and others. To find the topical feeds, follow the links in the left-hand menu under the Content Channels heading. At the bottom of the page that displays, right click the RSS image and copy the shortcut. The feeds consist of linked headlines and an introductory sentence. The magazine covers news and information regarding the application of technology in state and local government.

GovTrack

9 February 2005. Created by a talented graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania (but unaffiliated with the university), GovTrack helps you monitor federal legislation. You can track activity involving certain bills, Congressmen or subjects. Useful search aids help you find relevant legislation or the Representative for your district. GovTrack's sources include Thomas, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

Register free with the site to begin monitoring. You can then monitor new information online, or via e-mail or RSS feed.

GPOLISTSERV

18 September 2002. The Government Printing Office hosts several mailing lists, including one for routing Federal Register tables of contents.

HIPAA-REGS List

18 September 2002. Receive notification about the publication of documents or events related to the HIPAA Administrative Simplification regulations (such as NPRMs).

Internet Archive: U.S. Government Documents

7 March 2008. The Internet Archive maintains a collection of U.S. government documents. Currently, there are more than 2500 documents available in full-text in various formats. You may browse the collection by subject or keyword or search it by keyword. There is also an RSS feed for monitoring additions to the collection.

Michigan RSS Feeds

12 September 2005. The State of Michigan offers this index to government and related RSS feeds.

NCES News Flash

19 December 2002. The National Center for Education Statistics provides an email service for receiving breaking news from the agency.

New Job Postings

8 September 2004. Registered users of USAJobs now can set up email alerts for new job postings. You can set up alerts for specific job categories and locations, or you can create alerts with keywords.

NIH Listservs

18 September 2002. The National Institutes of Health maintains dozens of alert services, including several for the Food and Drug Administration (e.g., FDA-AD and FDA-FR) and the Department of Health and Human Services (e.g., WHATSNEW-AT-HHS).

PECAD News Feeds

22 March 2005. Revised 5 May 2008. The Production Estimates and Crop Assessment Division (PECAD) of the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service provides three XML-based feeds for information pertaining to production of agricultural. The feeds cover current and older top stories, as well as world agricultural production. They consist of linked headlines.

Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts

25 January 2005. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides an XML-based feed for obtaining information about significant actions involving products during the past 60 days. Actions included in the feed constitute a significant risk, or involve products with wide distribution. For example, recalls in the feed consist mostly of Class I recalls, whereas you can find information about all recalls in the FDA Enforcement Report. The feed contains headlines and summaries of full-text releases or reports.

Rhode Island Rules and Regulations

9 February 2005. The Office of the Secretary of State offers a free database containing active, repealed and superseded state agency regulations. You can search by agency (leave the keyword field blank) or keyword to find bibliographic information and a link to the full-text regulation in PDF. You can also qualify a query to include repealed or superseded rules.

If you want to track new regulations, set up a free "rules tracker" account. Access is immediate. "Rules trackers" let you set up e-mail notification about new rules that match your query. RSS enthusiasts should visit the agency's beta RSS feed builder at http://www2.sec.state.ri.us/rss/ .

RSS Feeds at Brookhaven National Laboratory

25 January 2005. Brookhaven National Laboratory offers an XML-based feed for press releases. The feed contains headlines and lead sentences.

RSS Feeds at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

25 January 2005. Oak Ridge National Laboratory provides two XML-based news feeds. One covers press releases and the other provides brief summaries of reports published in the lab's research and development magazine, ORNL Review. The press release feed provides headlines and lead sentences. The journal feed provides titles and one-sentence summaries.

RSS in Government

20 December 2004. Revised 29 November 2005. This Weblog informed about develops in government's use of XML-based news feeds. It now appears to be abandoned. It has not been updated in several months. However, because it still contains useful information, we will keep it in the guide.

SC Alerts

28 August 2002. The Office of Science of the Department of Energy offers a free email notification service for preprints in computer science, math, and physics. Preprints are unpublished manuscripts describing research in progress. Alerts notify recipient about matching keywords.

SEC Reports

19 December 2002. Do not confuse with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Space Environment Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration offers several current awareness services. These include a daily summary and analysis of solar and geomagnetic activity, a daily report describing the active solar regions, a daily report containing energetic solar event reports, plus solar and geomagnetic daily indices, solar indices, a summary of present solar-terrestrial conditions, and more.

Secrecy News

4 August 2004. Weekday newsletter Secrecy News, a publication of the FAS Project on Government Secrecy, provides news and commentary about issues pertaining to government secrecy, security and intelligence policies and more. The newsletter's XML-based feed provides the full-text of the newsletter, but does not display the headlines of individual news items.

State Legislators' Blogs and Legislatures with RSS Feeds

23 March 2005. The National Conference of State Legislatures compiled a chart with links to Weblogs run by state representatives. It also provides the address for RSS feeds affiliated with state legislatures.

Subscription Services for Tax Professionals

18 September 2002. The Internal Revenue Service offers email alert services for processing delays, national tax news and information about Web site development, local tax news, information about employee plans.

U.S. Copyright Office E-mail Options

8 October 2007. This page comprises the first step in subscribing to free e-mail notification services provided by the U.S. Copyright Office. Once you log in, you may opt to receive up to 3 services: What's New at the Copyright Office, Licensing (updates on regulations and procedures for compulsory and statutory licenses) or Legislative Developments (copyright-related bills introduced in Congress or enacted into law).

According to a notice in the 2 October 2007 issue of NewsNet, these e-mail services expand on and replace the existing NewsNet newsletter.

U.S. Government RSS Library

31 May 2005. FirstGov, the U.S. government's official Web portal, has compiled and categorized RSS feeds from government sites. Categories include agriculture, consumer issues, cyber-security, statistics, education, federal personnel, forestry, health, international relations, military and science. Each category contains links to related RSS feeds.

USSC-List

30 October 2003. Find an email subscription service for announcements from the U.S. Sentencing Commission. The mailings contain Federal Register notices, information about meetings and public hearings and other significant news about the Sentencing Guidelines and the Commission.
