Bazelon Center for Mental Health

22 February 2000. Revised 23 October 2007. This advocacy site offers information about current developments in the area of mental health. Find legislative alerts, information and documents pertaining to Americans with Disabilities (ADA), fair housing, and more.

Disability Law Resource Project

2 March 2004. Revised 23 October 2007. One of ten Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (DBTACs) funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Disability Law Resource Project (DLRP) provides information about the Americans with Disabilities Act, related laws and making Information Technology accessible to people with disabilities. Its Web site offers a Guide to Disability Law, which summarizes relevant sections of several disability laws, FAQs (an index to related summaries elsewhere) and a topical index of federal laws and U.S. Supreme Court opinions on disability issues.

disAbility.gov

29 August 2000. Revised 23 October 2007. In celebration of the 10th anniversary (July 26, 2000) of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities offers this portal of federal government information related to the Act. The portal covers several topics, including employment, education, housing, transportation, health, benefits, technology, community life and civil rights.

The site facilitates finding government information (laws, regulations, guidance documents, etc.) related to the Act. For example, from the home page, select Housing, and then the sub-topic, Accessibility and Universal Design, to find guidelines, model codes, checklists, and more.

Fair Housing

29 January 2004. Revised 23 October 2007. The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law compiles information about fair housing for people with mental disabilities. Find fact sheets covering issues like terminating a lease before it expires, reasonable accommodations, disability discrimination and more. The Center also provides news, case annotations, publications, articles and links to additional resources.

Handbook on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

23 October 2007. Revised 25 October 2007. Jointly prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, this handbook is the product of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. According to the introductory text, "preparation of the Handbook benefited from an editorial review board consisting of parliamentarians, academics and practitioners - many of whom are persons with disabilities.... [It] aims to assist parliamentarians and others in efforts to realize the Convention so that persons with disabilities can achieve the transition from exclusion to equality."

Idea '97

28 November 2001. Revised 23 October 2007. The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) of the U.S. Department of Education offered (now archived) a site devoted to The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA). It provides the text of the law as well as the complete Senate Committee Report, the text of the final regulations published during June 1999, and more. Please note: This site is archived and has not been updated in several years.

Intellectual Disabilities in the Workplace

1 November 2004. Revised 23 October 2007. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission provides this fact sheet on issues concerning workers and prospective employees with intellectual disabilities. Intellectual disabilities cover a range of impairments. The fact sheet defines what the Americans with Disabilities Act covers, what questions an employer can ask, treatment of medical information, accommodations, safety issues, conduct, harassment and enforcement.

LD Online

29 November 2001. Revised 23 October 2007. Designed for parents, teachers, and students, LD Online offers articles, message boards, publications, and more. The LD Store offers an excellent selection of publications on legal issues pertaining to learning disabilities. Searchers will also find useful links for additional sources of information.

National Center for Learning Disabilities

29 November 2001. Revised 23 October 2007. Find current news, statistics, facts about various types of learning disabilities, advice for parents and teachers, legislative information and more.

New Freedom Initiative

12 March 2003. Revised 23 October 2007. The Department of Labor recently launched this program to promote the employment of Americans with disabilities. The Web site offers frequently asked questions (FAQs) for workers and employers, fact sheets and more. Some documents available include information about compliance checklists for hiring those who are disabled, ADA (Americans with Disabilities) workplace requirements, tax-related issues, and how to serve the disabled community in sales and service environments.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

South Africa HIV/AIDS Case Law Database

4 December 2007. The Southern Africa Litigation Centre maintains a database containing judicial decisions on HIV/AIDS-related issues from in Botswana, South Africa, Nigeria, India, United Kingdom, Canada, United States and other countries. You may browse the database (it's small) by date or search it. Search criteria include the case name, country, subject category, date or keyword.

The full-text of matching decisions appears behind the "link to case" entry in the search results. Formats include HTML and PDF.

Special Education Law Blog

7 March 2006. Revised 23 October 2007. Chicago, Illinois-based attorney, Charles P. Fox, comments on news and legal developments pertaining to learning disabilities and special education. Some of the topics include assistive technology, diagnostic testing and parent advocacy. This blog offers an RSS feed.

Special Education Resources on the Internet

4 June 2003. Revised 23 October 2007. Compiled by Roseann Horner, whose credentials do not appear at the Web site, this site nonetheless appears to be a useful collection of briefly annotated resources pertaining to special education issues. It covers topics like special education law, learning disabilities, specific types of disabilities, resources for parents and educators and more. It even offers a section covering select books on special education.

Please note: While the site continues to index potentially useful resources, many of the links are dead. It appears that this collection of links is not kept up to date.
