ABA Family Legal Guide

2 September 2004. The American Bar Association makes available an online copy of its print publication, Family Legal Guide. Consisting of -- chapters--each a separate PDF file, the guide explains the law, legal processes and legal situations commonly encountered by lower and moderate income families. Chapters cover consulting with a lawyer, how the legal system works, family law, buying and selling a home, home ownership, renting, consumer credit and more. There is also a glossary of legal terms.

Access to Family Information by Adopted Persons

13 May 2002. Revised 3 December 2004. Previously titled "Access to Adoption Records State-by-State," this National Adoption Information Clearinghouse publication summarizes the law regarding access to adoption records. "In nearly all States, adoption records are sealed and withheld from public inspection after the adoption is finalized. To maintain the confidentiality of these records, most States have instituted procedures by which parties to an adoption may obtain nonidentifying and identifying information from an adoption record, while still protecting the interests of all parties." The publication goes on to explain the procedures.

Caring for Children

13 May 2002. Self legal help publisher, Nolo Press, offers this collection of articles and advice. It covers adoption, guardianship, special education, keeping children safe, child custody and visitation, and child support.

Child & Family Web Guide

19 October 2005. Faculty and students at Tufts University compile this resource guide for those interested in, or studying, child development. It evaluates and annotates Web-based resources on family and parenting, education and learning, child development, health and mental health and recreation. The guide features an extensive subject index that you can browse, a subject guide by age, a list of "ask an expert" resources and a list of news sites.

Child Abuse and Neglect Organizations Search

21 December 2001. Revised 23 October 2007. The Child Welfare and Information Gateway offers a database for finding information about organizations with a primary focus on adoption, child abuse and neglect, child welfare, or related issues. You can limit queries by state or select a pre-defined topic, such as adoption search, children with disabilities, or foster care. The information provided includes the name and contact information of the organization, its primary functions and services, the type of organization (e.g., national) and a brief description.

ChildCare.gov

26 June 2002. This portal provides access to a variety of child care materials, including some non-governmental information. It covers sources of current information, as well as information about running child care programs. Find links to clearinghouses, government agencies, government funded projects, legislation, news, and more. Unfortunately, the site does a poor job of indexing the topics it covers. We also experienced some trouble with its search engine (Overture?). We suggest entering single terms with liberal use of the engine's wildcard (*). Beware of unmarked links from the pay-for-positioning engine Overture.

Divorce & Child Custody

13 May 2002. Self legal help publisher, Nolo Press, offers this collection of articles and advice. It covers getting a divorce, divorce mediation, property division and alimony, child custody and visitation, child support, and changing your name.

Divorce Blog

15 October 2003. Family law attorney Lee Rosen comments on North Carolina family law issues. He provides information about developments in that state concerning divorce, child custody, alimony, property division, child support and domestic violence. The site's RSS news feed appears to contain the full content of the blog.

Divorce Source

29 May 2002. Find summaries of state divorce laws, case law, articles, and more. The site also sells books, state-specific forms, and other products and services.

DivorceNet

13 May 2002. Find summaries of state divorce laws with citation information, articles with state-specific information, and lawyers. The site also sells divorce forms.

DOMA Watch

8 September 2005. Intended for legislators and attorneys, but available to the public, this Web site provides information about current laws and litigation involving Defense of Marriage Acts. You will find the text of legal documents here, including court opinions and related filings. There is also a handy feature for finding the law of same-sex marriages by state.

Family Law

2 September 2004. LexisNexis offers this resource containing news summaries and select publication updates pertaining to family law. News topics include adoption and paternity, marital property, child and spousal support, divorce and relationships, and custody and visitation. Use of the site is free and all information appears in full-text.

Family Law Prof Blog

19 October 2005. Three law professors -- Barbara Glesner Fines, Robert E. Oliphant and Nancy Ver Steegh -- blog about family law issues. They comment on legal developments and stories in the news with links to the original sources. They also provide an extensive list of resources and maintain XML-based news feeds.

Greater Upstate Law Project, The

27 May 2003. The Greater Upstate Law Project (GULP), which describes itself as "a non-profit legal resource center providing technical assistance to local legal services programs and other community groups in New York State," offers commentary on a variety of issues, including domestic violence, child care, housing, immigration and health. Find the full-text of several GULP publications like Disability Law News and Legal Services Journal. The site's Online Resource Center provides free (but registered) access to a Fair Hearings database, which contains administrative decisions from various New York state agencies.

Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction

13 May 2002. Read the text of this convention as well as related information. For more information, see the State Department's Office of Children's Issues' page on International Parental Child Abduction.

International Adoption

9 March 2006. The U.S. Department of State provides introductory information about international adoptions. It links to a more extensive brochure that outlines the role of the State Department, informs about U.S. requirements and applying for immigration visas, and more. You will also find links to related international legal documents and information.

Marriage License Information by State

17 August 2005. FindLaw offers a directory of resources on state marriage license requirements. Select the relevant state to find a listing of link resources.

National Adoption Directory

13 May 2002. Revised 3 December 2004. Find contact information for adoption-related organizations and services, including public and licensed private adoption agencies, support groups, State reunion registries, and more.

National Adoption Information Clearinghouse Database

29 May 2002. Search the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse's bibliographic database. Search by keyword, or a variety of other criteria, to find articles, reports, unpublished papers, proceedings, and more. Each database entry offers complete bibliographic information and an abstract.

Prenuptial Agreements: The Basics

13 May 2002. Bankrate.com explains the basics of prenuptial agreements. This document explains what they are, who should consider having one, how to approach the subject, validity, proper procedures, keeping it current, and the benefits of having one.

Same-Sex Marriage: A Selective Bibliography of the Legal Literature

8 September 2005. Rutgers University librarian Paul Axel-Lute compiles and maintains this bibliography of the legal literature on same-sex marriages. It covers case law, legislation, ALR annotations, Web-based resources, books and articles going back to 1997. It also links to sources for earlier materials. While most of the citations deal with U.S. law, Axel-Lute includes some citations that cover law in foreign countries.

State Statutes Search

21 March 2005. The National Adoption Information Clearinghouse provides a search utility for finding state laws on child abuse and neglect, child welfare or adoption. Results consist of a summary of the state law(s) sought. The summary includes the legal citation and basic legal requirements. For example, adoptees who want to know Pennsylvania state law on accessing information about birth parents, will find a summary of the appropriate statutory code. In addition, the summary provides basic information regarding who may access the information, access to non-identifying information, access to identifying information, access to the original birth certificate and the agency where you may find such information.

SupportGuidelines.com

15 October 2003. Virginia lawyer Laura W. Morgan maintains this site devoted to helping lawyers, who are researching "the law of child support in general and child support guidelines in particular." It links to child support guidelines for fifty states and the District of Columbia. It also provides child support calculators, Chapter 1 of the treatise Child Support Guidelines: Interpretation and Application, case annotations and news summaries, articles and more.

Tables Summarizing the Law in the Fifty States

13 May 2002. Revised 3 October 2003. Formerly entitled, Family Law in the 50 States, The American Bar Association, Section on Family Law, offers several tables summarizing state family laws. They cover alimony, custody, child support, grounds for divorce, property division, third-party visitation, appointment laws, marital rape exemptions, child name change, state court systems for family law matters, subject matter jurisdiction and length of judges' terms.

Violence Intervention and Prevention Database

5 December 2002. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers this bibliographic database of literature pertaining to issues of violence and children. It covers bullying, child abuse, domestic violence, mediation, school violence, and more. When available, the bibliographic record links to the full-text publication.
