27 October 1999. Revised 8 February 2001. A.M. Best offers ratings and company profiles for life/health, property/casualty, and international insurance companies.

A.M. Best Health Care Center

6 September 2001. The site offers the latest health care ratings, news and research from A.M. Best. It offers ratings for health care companies worldwide. Viewing the rating requires free registration. Researchers must pay to obtain a complete report.

ChoiceTrust

23 June 2006. Online public records provider Choicepoint offers this consumer Web site for obtaining information about one's own "insurance score." Consumers may purchase their score for automobile and homeowners insurance underwriting. The score reveals the percentage of consumers who receive a score lower than yours; e.g., an automobile score of 764 means that about 72% percent of insured drivers receive a lower score (or higher insurance premium).

Factors that affect insurance scores include outstanding debt, duration of credit history, late payments, new applications for credit, pending lawsuits, and more. The insurance score report also includes a credit report from Equifax. Several layers of security at the Web site guard consumers against unauthorized access of their credit information.

CNA RE

11 May 2001. CNA Financial Corporation offers news and information about reinsurance issues. Find "white papers" on topics like Internet-related exposures and liabilities, reinsurance news, an annotated directory of external Web sites (including one devoted to sources of information about storms and weather), as well as a primer on reinsurance.

Glossary Agent

13 September 2001. MultiTech Communications, Inc. offers a gateway to glossaries of interest to professionals in insurance, reinsurance, risk management, employee benefits, healthcare, and related fields such as law and financial services. Access entries at the bottom of the opening page. As the term gateway implies, entries come from a variety of sources including several in foreign languages.

Insurance Industry Internet Network

8 October 2003. The Insurance Industry Internet Network (IIIN) offers several resources of potential interest to insurance and legal professionals. Find several directories that help you find 1) law firms that represent insurance companies insurance Law List), 2) insurance company Web sites, 3) insurance agents and brokers, 4) insurance-related news and journal articles, 5) corporate counsel (Directory of Insurance Company Corporate Counsel) and more.

3 September 1999. Subtitled The Consumer Insurance Guide, this site offers much that will interest lawyers. Find ratings by Standard & Poors, news about insurance company lawsuits, statistics about complaints filed, insurer profiles, and more.

InsWeb

3 February 2004. InsWeb Insurance Services, Inc., a licensed insurance agent, provides information about the cost of many types of insurance. You do not have to submit any personally identifying information to receive quotes concerning the approximate cost of life or health insurance. Quotes for some other types of insurance, including automobile, homeowners, renters, condominium and motorcycle as well as home warranty coverage, may require personally identifying information. Life insurance quotes include the name of the company and product, the premium, S & P rating and assets under management. Additionally, InsWeb partners with Western and Southern Life to provide quotes for critical illness insurance. InsWeb's Learning Center offers commentary and analytical tools.

Internet Law and Insurance Resources

8 October 2003. The American Bar Association (ABA) Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section offers this insurance law portal. Find articles, national and international associations, continuing legal education (CLE) courses, news and links to relevant Web sites and databases. Topics covered include medical litigation, civil rights, environment, personal injury, product liability and more. Although the portal provides a wealth of valuable links, its pages are cluttered and not easy to navigate.

Language Perils

13 September 2001. MultiTech Communications, Inc. periodically publishes articles that address terminology used in a wide variety of the world’s languages in insurance, reinsurance, risk management, employee benefits, healthcare, and related fields such as law and financial services. Legal professionals should find these articles using in a variety of circumstances.

Licensing & Insurance System

16 July 2002. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers this database for obtaining licensing and insurance information about carriers. Search by USDOT number or docket number, company name, dba, or state to find basic company information, authority type and status, insurance type and amount, as well as the blanket company and its process agents.

Local Climatological Data

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) offers Local Climatological Data, a monthly summary of temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, wind speed and direction observations for several hundred cities in the U.S. and its territories. Summaries are available from July 1996.

NAIC Consumer Information Source - Insurance Company Search

10 March 2005. The consumer Web site of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides a feature for finding basic information about insurance companies, the complaints filed against them, and their finances. Search by company name and state to find basic company information (name, business type, home office and NAIC number), as well as three reports. The reports provide the number of closed complaints against the company, where it is licensed to do business, and information about finances. Basic financial information includes the total amount of premiums written, assets and liabilities. You may also obtain a more detailed profile, which includes the business's state of domicile, federal employer identification number (FEIN), telephone and three-year income/loss trend. Also available are PDF images of financial pages from a company's annual statement.

QuickQuote

3 February 2004. Now part of the ING Group, a global financial institution, QuickQuote provides information about the cost of many types of insurance. You do not have to submit any personally identifying information to receive quotes concerning the approximate cost of term life or health insurance. Quotes for some other types of insurance, including short term, dental, travel or automobile insurance, may require personally identifying information. Quotes include the name of the company and product, the premium, rating class, S & P rating and A.M. Best rating. Additionally the site offers three resource centers covering life, health and automobile insurance. The resource centers provide quotes, calculators, presentations and commentary.

Social Security Death Index

Search this death claims database to find names, addresses and social security numbers.

Storm Data

Storm Data and Unusual Weather Phenomena contain a chronological listing, by state, of hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail, floods, drought conditions, lightning, high winds, snow, temperature extremes and other weather phenomena. The reports are provided by the National Weather Service and contain statistics on personal injuries and damage estimates. STORM DATA is a publication of the National Climatic Data Center.

Storm Data is available from January 1994.
